Go Trip

Agile Travel & Tourism Booking Platform

Project Overview

Go Trip is a comprehensive, full-stack travel agency web application engineered from the ground up utilizing disciplined Agile Scrum methodology. Developed to resolve the friction of fragmented tourism discovery and opaque reservation pricing, Go Trip delivers a unified portal for destination exploration, dynamic real-time trip fare calculations, role-based user management (Travelers vs Agency Administrators), and a resilient booking lifecycle. Developed and iterated across five structured two-week Agile sprints with daily standups, backlog grooming, and burn-down tracking at MM(DU), the project demonstrates real-world software engineering rigor—including an architectural migration from SQLite to MongoDB Atlas for cloud persistence and an automated Jest integration testing pipeline.

Agile Scrum Organization & Sprint Breakdown

Rather than developing in an unstructured, ad-hoc fashion, Go Trip was executed following strict Agile Scrum ceremonies:

  • Sprint 1 — Backlog Grooming & Entity Modeling: Authored user stories with testable acceptance criteria (Given/When/Then), structured product backlogs, and defined normalized database schemas for Users, Destinations, Packages, and Bookings.
  • Sprint 2 — Role-Based Authentication & Navigation: Engineered secure session management with password hashing and role-based access control (RBAC), dynamically adapting the navigation bar for regular travelers vs agency admins.
  • Sprint 3 — Dynamic Booking & Real-Time Price Engine: Implemented client-side fare calculation that reacts instantly to passenger counts, trip duration, and accommodation tiers with zero external UI framework overhead.
  • Sprint 4 — Cloud Database Migration: Successfully migrated the persistence layer from local SQLite to MongoDB Atlas with Mongoose schemas, adding connection pooling, automated package seeding, and persistent hosting on Render.
  • Sprint 5 — Automated QA & Jest Test Suite: Authored automated end-to-end integration and unit tests covering API endpoints, booking state machines, and authentication boundaries.

Dynamic Real-Time Pricing & Booking Lifecycle

Booking holidays requires instantaneous price clarity without unexpected checkout surprises. Go Trip features a reactive, pure JavaScript booking engine that calculates transparent costs on the fly:

  • Passenger Scalability: Automatic per-traveler fare calculation with adult and child adjustments.
  • Package Tier Modifiers: Standard, Deluxe, and Luxury accommodation multipliers calculated synchronously.
  • Date & Seasonal Logic: Validates checkout dates against departure schedules to prevent scheduling overlaps.
  • Booking State Machine: Tracks reservations across clear lifecycle states (Pending Verification → Confirmed → Completed / Cancelled), offering travelers real-time status visibility while providing administrators one-tap booking fulfillment controls.

Multi-Role Access Control & Admin Dashboard

The platform incorporates a dual-persona architecture with strict endpoint security:

  • Traveler Experience: Allows registered explorers to browse destinations, customize itineraries, track reservation statuses, and review transparent booking summaries.
  • Administrator Command Center: Empowers tour operators to add new destinations, adjust pricing tiers, manage seat capacity, inspect customer bookings, and update reservation statuses in real-time through protected administrative middleware.

Architectural Migration: SQLite to MongoDB Atlas

Initially prototyped on local SQLite, deployment to modern containerized cloud infrastructure (Render.com) revealed ephemeral file system limitations—server restarts wiped disk-stored SQLite databases. To ensure continuous uptime and persistent data retention:

  • Migrated all relational data models to Mongoose ODM schemas on MongoDB Atlas.
  • Configured auto-reconnect logic with exponential backoff and connection pooling.
  • Built an automated bootstrap seeder that populates default destinations and tour packages upon initial cluster connection if collections are empty.

Engineering Challenges & Solutions

P

Challenge

Persistent Data Loss on Ephemeral Cloud Containers: Initial deployment on Render wiped local SQLite database files during automatic container spin-downs and redeployments, resetting bookings and user accounts.

S

Solution

Architected a complete database migration to cloud-hosted MongoDB Atlas. Built robust Mongoose models with connection pooling, automated database initialization scripts that pre-seed travel packages on first boot, and graceful connection error recovery.

P

Challenge

Multi-Variable Pricing Calculation Lag & UI Inconsistency: Calculating complex trip costs across passenger count, days, and room upgrades in vanilla JavaScript led to DOM desynchronization and invalid negative-passenger states.

S

Solution

Engineered a unified, deterministic pricing state machine with strict boundary sanitization (enforcing minimum passenger rules and valid date ranges) that recalculates fares in <5ms and batches DOM updates for smooth, glitch-free UI reactivity.

P

Challenge

Securing Administrative Endpoints Against Privilege Escalation: Ensuring regular travelers could not tamper with travel package definitions or access other users' booking data via direct API calls.

S

Solution

Developed custom Express middleware layers (authenticateToken, requireRole) that parse secure session tokens, verify role permissions, and reject unauthorized operations with standardized HTTP 401 Unauthorized and 403 Forbidden responses.

P

Challenge

Maintaining Code Quality & Regression Prevention Across Rapid Agile Sprints: Iterative sprint releases risked breaking existing booking status transitions and authentication handlers.

S

Solution

Constructed an automated test suite utilizing Jest and Supertest, testing API endpoint contracts, role-based route guards, and boundary conditions prior to sprint review demonstrations.
